All of us lose
motivation at some point in time. All days will not be colorful and good. We
will have bad days, somedays will be harder than the other. We might not even
want to get out of our bed. So many doubts about ourselves will creep in. We
will feel like giving up.
You try to work, but
you will always feel drained out of energy. When you have no motivation to do
anything even the easiest work will seem like the hardest chore to you.
It is absolutely
normal to lose motivation sometimes. The point is, are you stuck at the phase
of lost motivation? Or are you pulling yourself up to regain the motivation and
keep going?
You always ALWAYS
have a choice to choose what you want. If you think that you have no motivation
and the only way is to give up then your goal and vision will have an abrupt
stop there. Or, if you chose to keep going until you achieve that goal then you
will taste the success and all the efforts you have put will seem worthwhile to
you.
When you lose
motivation, do these things
1. Re-evaluate your goals
When you are really
passionate about your goal then it is less likely for you to lose complete
motivation. Only set goals for things that you are passionate about. Also,
don’t set a goal because someone is asking you to do it. Your goal should be
totally in your control.
Therefore,
reevaluate your goal. Check if it is meeting its criteria of a perfect goal.
Ask yourself why you want to achieve the goal? If your outcome is really
pleasing to you, you will not give up on it because you don’t have the motivation to
do it. So be clear of the outcome. Is the outcome favorable to you?
Go on and on until
you actually feel confident enough to go for the goal. And don’t forget to
enjoy the process!
2. Upsides and downsides of your
goal
This is also a kind
of reevaluation of your goal. When you feel demotivated to achieve your goal,
write down what are the advantages of achieving the goal and what are the
disadvantages of not achieving the goal.
For example, I wanted to lose weight but I feel demotivated to
do so. So, I will write down the consequences of achieving the goal and not
achieving the goal.
The advantage of
achieving the goal will be feeling confident, being able to fit into all the
clothe sizes, being more pretty, appreciation, I might be an inspiration to
someone, increased energy level, great concentration.
The disadvantages
might me not feeling good, guilty, feeling overweight, sad, depressed,
unhealthy, etc.
You can also ask
yourself these questions and write down the answers for it
- Where will I be in 5 years if I achieved my goal?
- Where will I be in 5 years if I do not achieve the goal?
These questions will
make you look in the long term. This will help you to get back on track.
3. Set realistic goals
I cannot emphasize
more on setting realistic and achievable goals. Do not set some fancy goals in
order to look big. No, that won't help you. Set goals that are measurable and
attainable.
I would recommend
you to read my blog on "8 steps to follow for setting a goal right".
This post will help you understand how you should set a goal.
4. Visualize success
Create a movie
inside your head on how you will be when you achieve the goal.
Let's take the same
example of losing weight. I will create a movie inside my head and will keep on
playing it. In this case, I will create a visual movie where I am already in my
ideal weight, wearing the dress of my choice. I am going out (of course with my
masks on) and every friend I know is appreciating me for the hard work I put to
lose my weight. I smile to myself because I feel more confident now than ever.
I thank myself for all the hard work!
After creating this
movie inside my head, I will keep on playing it every day in a specific time. I
will schedule a time just to feel my movie. Whenever I feel like giving up, I
will run this movie in my head and feel the feelings of achieving the goal already.
This method will
help to boost your mood. You will feel more energized after doing this!
5. Recall your success
This method involves
recalling a time in your past where you already felt motivated. Just go back to
that state and analyze what made you feel so motivated? Was it the
circumstance? Was it your goa? Was it the people? Ask yourself what made you
feel so motivated?
After getting your
answers, come back to your current state where you are feeling demotivated.
Compare both the times i.e., the time when you were motivated vs the time you
are feeling demotivated. What Is Missing? Now, add the missing element to your
goal. This is a simple but effective way to regain your motivation.
6. Talk to a supportive
friend/coach
It is always better
to have people who are supportive of you. Talk to someone about how
unmotivated you feel. It can be a friend, family, colleague, or a coach. Vent
out your feelings. This might first help you relax.
I would suggest having a coach to help you out in situations related to your goal. Coaches are
trained people who are there to help you achieve your goals. They will provide
you with customized methods to help you grow.
I have had more than
one coaches help me out at a time when I went down the drain. The impact they had
on me is huge. That is why I even chose coaching as my profession.
7. Take Action
Some of us wait for
motivation to hit us. If we are going to wait, I guess we are going to wait
until we die. Because motivation does not come to you and say you have to get
up and get going. No, that will not happen.
Action is what creates motivation. Even if you feel like doing nothing, you have to push
yourself to move. When you start putting action then motivation will come to
you easily and effectively.
8. Get an Accountability partner
Most of us, give up
on a goal so soon and easily because we do not have someone to be accountable
to. I agree that it is quite hard to be accountable to ourselves. That is why,
we all need an accountability partner who actually really cares.
This is where again
coaches come into play. Coaches can be your greatest accountability partner
with so much care and love. They always push you ahead and hold your hand.
Having a coach will obviously ease your path to success.
9. Don’t punish yourself
Don’t punish
yourself or overload yourself with so much work. This might be tiring and
stressful which in turn makes it harder to achieve the goal.
Always, be kind to
yourself while working towards the goal. If you want to take off one day, the
do it. If you want to go slow the please go slow. Understand, that you have no
one to prove your worth except yourself. Have your own plan and follow it. Do not
copy others. Because someone's sweet might be your sour.
When you beat up
yourself in order to get there, you will lose the positive feeling you have
towards your goal. An important prerequisite to achieve your goal is to have a
positive feeling towards it. When you lose it, then it would be hard for you to
keep going.
10. Develop a growth mindset
A growth mindset is
essential in every part of your life. Developing a growth mindset will change
your life and the way you approach things.
According to the growth
mindset, success is learning. When you have this type of mindset you will never
lose motivation because even failure is a success because you are learning
something.
"Success consists of going from failure to
failure without loss of enthusiasm" - Winston Churchill
