Why is commitment important in life?

Commitment is a crucial need for succeeding in the long term. Recall a time when you succeeded in something. How much were you committed to that goal? Rate your commitment from a scale of 1 - 10. I am sure that your commitment level would have been more than 8.

In every aspect of your life, commitment plays a great role. You need a commitment to a relationship to live a happy life with your partner. You require a commitment to your work, to reach higher goals. You need a commitment to your personal development to elevate the level of life you live.

To succeed in anything, there are three prerequisites.
  • Goal
  • Action
  • Commitment

A goal will give you direction and will put you on the right path. Taking action will increase your probability to achieve your goal. Taking action will also infuse motivation into you. Commitment will help you keep going in spite of all the setbacks and failures. It will help you reach the ultimate goal.

Having a goal and taking action is not sufficient for success. We can't guarantee that our road to success will be a smooth one. We might face failures and hardships, commitment is the only thing that keeps us going.

Commitment separates "Dreamers" from "doers" and the world follows only doers.

Everyone might have a goal. But, it doesn't seem that everyone is succeeding at it. People who reach their goals are the ones who are committed to it. This commitment is what decides who rules the world and who follows it.

Don’t over commit

Some people find it hard to be committed to their goal because they usually over commit. They set their goals in an unrealistic manner ( See this post to know how to set goals) because of this, they find it hard to concentrate on their goals. This will make them lose motivation, which in turn drives them to drop the commitment.

Commit only to priorities

When you commit to everything that is put on your plate you tend to give only your divided attention to every task. As a result of this, you tend to achieve nothing. Multi-tasking is very bad for your goals. So, first chose what your priorities are and then commit only to that. Give your complete focus and energy only to those priorities. For your best, do not commit to more than two to three goals to the maximum.

Evaluate commitments

According to me, tracking progress is quite important. So, I would suggest to always track your commitment. Track your feelings and energy towards your commitment. Are you pushing yourself to somehow achieve the goal or are you still enjoying your process enthusiastically despite all the setbacks? Review your commitments and tune them according to your need.

Commitments help you achieve anything long term. They kill your short term satisfaction and push you towards the real success.

All the best!
