Why reading is important? | Reading Books
There are numerous
profound benefits to reading. Every single most successful person in the world
is an avid reader. Bill gates read 50 books per year on average, Warren Buffet
spends 80% of his day reading.
“Read 500
pages… every day. That's how knowledge works" - Warren Buffet
Reading can help you grow mentally and emotionally.
Developing the habit of reading can be beneficial for you in myriad ways. It
might help you in relationships, career, personal development, and whatnot.
I am an avid reader
and I love reading. I always wonder how much knowledge and information are
being missed by the ones who do not read at all. Reading is not tough and boring, you just have to find the right book to get started.
I really wanted
every one of you to start reading. But first, to start a new habit you need to
know what benefits it is going to provide you. So, let's see the top 10 benefits
of reading below
1. Reading can be your life
savior
Reading will help you discover
yourself. There are too many truths and secrets beneath the pages of every
book. It will help you find you.
Reading has been a tremendous
life savior for me. First of all, I was an average person who followed the
crowd and wanted to work a 9 to 5, fighting for bread every day. I believed the
wake-up, work, entertain, sleep, repeat was the only system and the whole world
was based on it.
But, since I started reading some
books like Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind and many I knew that
everything is made up and I can design my life the way I want.
I learned a lot. A lot, that 14
years of schooling and 3 years of college did not teach me.
I found myself from the books I
read. I knew that I loved writing, I loved helping people, I was good at
empathy and counseling and also I can, not only make a living but also a
business out of what I love. Isn't it awesome? Yeah. And, it was all because of
books.
2. Reading can make you smarter
When you read and learn
something that others don’t know obviously it will make you smarter.
Books are the outcome of years
of research, learning, hurdles by the author. An author has to go into a lot
before publishing his/her book. But as a reader, you can gain all the
information he gathered over the years through the book by reading it for just one
or two weeks.
When you read a book it is like having a conversation with the author. It is the author's words, their
thoughts, their knowledge that they have poured into the book. Reading it will
give you an insight into their knowledge.
Imagine, that you want to start a
startup company and you really need good advice. Who do you think can give you a bit of good advice? Your neighbor, your
friends or Jeff Bezos? Obviously, you would go with Bezos. But how can you have
a conversation with him? Just by reading his books.
Books are your lifelong mentors. And
the best part is, you can have all the best mentors in the world with you
always!
3. It boosts your imagination and creativity
Reading books will push your
boundaries of imagination. It will help you imagine the impossible and boost
your creative abilities.
There is a lot of difference in
reading a book and watching a movie that is based on the book ( Harry Potter
fans know it :p). There will be so many minute details in the book whereas all
those will be missed in the movie.
"It was on the corner of the street that he noticed the first sign of
something peculiar – a cat reading a map. For a second, Mr. Dursley didn’t
realize what he had seen – then he jerked his head around to look again. There
was a tabby cat standing on the corner of Privet Drive, but there wasn’t a map
in sight. What could he have been thinking of? It must have been a trick of the
light. Mr. Dursley blinked and stared at the cat. It stared back. As Mr. Dursley
drove around the corner and up the road, he watched the cat in his mirror. It
was now reading the sign that said Privet Drive – no, looking at the sign; cats
couldn’t read maps or signs. Mr. Dursley gave himself a little shake and put the
cat out of his mind. As he drove towards town he thought of nothing except a
large order of drills he was hoping to get that day."
The above is a paragraph from Harry
Potter and the Philosophers stone. Your mind probably knows that cats don’t read
but anyhow it imagined a cat reading a map. Didn't it? You can harness the
depth of your imaginative ability by reading.
4. It makes you humble
Those who have read nothing will
always seem to act as if they know everything. There is an ego attached to
their knowledge.
But, those who are well-read will
tend to be humble because more you read the more you know that you know only a
little of the whole world. When you accept that you know only a small part, you
will naturally be humble.
5. Books are your best friends
There is no best companion like a good book.
When you start reading, you get immersed in the book completely and feel that
you are playing the protagonist of the novel.
Once
you tap into that feeling of reading a good book you can never feel alone. Books are always your best friends. They
don’t judge you, they expect nothing from you yet they always remain with you.
6. Improves your memory and
focus
The main lack in this fast-paced world is the focus. We always tend to toggle between everything we do. Reading helps you to
increase your focus and improve concentration.
It also helps in improving the memory
functioning of the brain. While reading a book there are so many things that we
need to remember in order to have a smooth reading. We need to remember the
character names, places, twists, things, nook information, plot, subplot and more. Memory improves when you pay
attention to all these and are able to remember the storyline.
7. Motivation
Basically, while reading a novel
most of us imagine ourselves into the story. We think as if we are playing the
protagonist role. The same goes with the motivation books/biographies, we
imagine that we are going through the problem/situation. We believe that we are
breaking through the problem.
Books give you a newer perspective of everything
you go through. They give you motivation and support. Books are your leaders!
8. Books reduce stress and
depression
According to research by
university of Sussex reading for even 10
minutes a day can reduce your stress level by 68 percent.
Psychologists have found that while
reading a book we are more focused on the story and worry less about the real
world and responsibilities. So, books are the best to escape from stress.
Books can also help you overcome
depression. I came into this reading world when I was sixteen when I had my teenage
depression and anxiety and I successfully overcame it with the help of books.
From then, the first to go to when I am depressed are my books.
9. Improves your vocabulary and
language skills
It is opaque that reading books
will enhance your language skills. It will help you speak, read and write way better than the nonreaders. It will also help you in acquiring vast
vocabulary and you rarely get stuck for lack of words.
10. Reading Helps with immense
inner peace and tranquility
Reading not only decreases your
stress level but also helps you with immense peace.
It is said that reading self-help
books will enhance your mood and increase the level of optimism. Whereas,
reading spiritual books tends to lower your blood pressure.
Above are some of
the profound benefits you can have by making reading a daily habit. I hope you
make use of this much-needed habit.
Happy Reading!
