Emotional
intelligence(EI) is a term that is used to measure our ability to manage our
own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. Having a good EI indicates
that you live a happy and stress-free life. EI can influence our personal and
professional life's to a great extent. Having the ability to understand and
manage our own emotions can be a great aid in accelerating success in every
area of our life.
Emotional
intelligence Quotient (EQ) is as important or even more important than the
Intelligent quotient (IQ). Unfortunately, we are only trained to improve our IQ
but not our EQ. Of course, having a good IQ will help you land up in a good job
and make a decent living. But, I am not sure if it will guarantee you a happy
life. There are millionaires and billionaires out there with lavish money and
zero happiness. Ultimately, we need happiness and peace over anything else. It
is undeniable that one needs to have a good EQ to live a happy, peaceful, and
contented life. Below are some tips that you can inculcate to your life to
improve EI:
1. Respond instead of reacting
The most constructive way in which you can improve your EQ is by learning to pause
whenever you feel a surge of emotions. I was someone who had no control over my
temper. I used to burst out and scream whenever I was angry. This actually
worsened my mental health more and more.
Then, I decided to
learn and change myself. I started reading and researching more on how to
improve my emotional stability and such. That is when I came across this pause
and reflect technique. Being forthright, this is going to be a little hard at
the beginning. But once you start observing your emotions, you will know when
you are about to burst out. Now, put a stop to the venting of the emotions. Pause.
Breathe. And respond in a calm manner no matter how intruding the situation may
be. This has a great ability to slow down your emotions and help you think
clearly. Learning pause and respect will not only serve you good but also to
the people around you.
2. Improve listening skills
Improving your
active listening skills will also develop your EQ. Being a good listener will
give you more information on that person and their perspective of the world. An
active listener is also less impulsive and more clear.
Understand that
listening is not only about listening to the words and sentences of the other
person. It is also the ability to understand the non-verbal details of the
communication, like body language. Being a good listener will eliminate any
misunderstandings and develop a sense of trust between the speaker and the
listener.
3. Be optimistic
You need to be
optimistic to tackle all the emotional depths with ease. Being optimistic means able to look through
the problem to derive a solution no matter what the situation is. Optimism will
give you a sense of confidence and clarity. Remember that clarity and awareness
is very important when it comes to developing a good EQ.
Secondly, the environment you create also
influences your Emotional Quotient. If you are someone who always carries a
positive attitude showering positivity to all the places you go, then you are
more likely to create a positive environment around you. This will help you in
developing your EQ more and more.
4. Develop perspective
Having a good EQ means that you have the ability to
manage your emotions and also the emotions of others. To manage other emotions
you first need to be in their shoes and walk their life. This will be possible
only if you develop a perspective. Remember that everyone in this world is
unique and has a unique perspective. So, out in work to understand how the
other person feels and thinks. Put yourself in their place and think as they
do. So that you will always choose the best for you as well as them.
5. Ownership
Being responsible
for your emotions is extremely important if you want to have a good EQ. Never
ever blame others for what you feel. If you feel hurt in response to what
someone says or does then do not lash out at them, you are responsible for
that. You are not a puppet and they do not have the strings to control you. You
are in total control of your emotions. Your reaction is your responsibility.
Your feelings are your responsibility. Once you start to accept your feelings
and take ownership on them then this will have a great positive impact on all
areas of your life.
